Inventory light

Inventory light is a content management system (CMS). With Inventory light it is possible to change content of websites. It is a very easy to use system, which allows the user to changes text, images, audio, video and also special content, such as items from agenda, tests, and files for download, guestbook etc.

The system also offers access to the list of your clients, that can register themselves on your site. It is possible to send messages by email to all of your clients at once.

There is an automatic log, that registers all the events, such as users that open pages. This way you can have a visualisation of the access to your pages.

After loging in with your user name and password, the system shows the structure of the website, in a tree view. For each site there can be a different structure. Like the windows explorer, you can open items, and select on a specific item to edit it.

On the side, you can see an item that contains a picture was selected. The item shows the date and by who it was added and changed. You can see a log of the changes that were made to this item. Like this you can return to content you have had before.

The item shows a form, which is the type of content that it contains. In this case, it is of the type "picture". Each item always has a Title, which is the identification of the item. It is the name that is also used to display the item in the tree. The description is the content of the item, which can exist in various languages. The current selected language you can see on the top, which is "english". When selecting another language, the same form is shown with the same picture, but with the description of the selected language. It is very easy to manage your content this way.

With the arrows you can move an item upwards or downwards in the tree. This is usefull for lists, like news messages or agenda items, where the ordering is important.

The structure of the tree can also be changed using the mouse to drag/drop an item. The example on the side sows an item (for example, "lettres" ) was selected with the mouse and dragged to its destination. In this case the item will be moved like a child.

Some places can not be selected as a destination, as shown in the image to the side.

Using the mouse, you can select in what way you want to drop the item. Drop the item on the label to add the item as a child, but when dropping on the image, you can drop the item as a "next". In this case, it will be added as a "next".

Restricted area

In the inventory light system, there is a part where you can manage your contacts. A contact is an identified visitor on the website. On you website you can provide a page where a user can register himself. After registration, the administrator can confirm it, and after this the user can login on the site, and access the restricted area. If required, you can confirm also simply by sending a mail message, and letting the user click on a link. Of course, this is less secure.

After logging in, the visitor can have access to more items of the website, that are part of the restricted area. This way, content that you don't want to share with the public can remain protected.

To make the content of the restricted area even more flexible, you can use groups and set access on items, so that only users of specific groups can access the items. See more about groups below.

Special content

Agenda: On your website you can display, for example, an agenda, with special events. To the side is an example of the website of http://rafaelponde.com. To change this content, in the tree we have an item agenda, as shown:

When clicking on a specific item, the screen shows the details of the item, that can be changed and saved.

Observe that the label and the description in this case are identical, but this is only for the selected language. In another language, the label is still the same, but the description can be different.

The user does not need to worry about the layout, which is automatically applied:

Foto album: a foto album is a colection of fotos, that can be organised in the tree just like items of an agenda, like shown on the side. Each item can be opened and changed, even the description of the foto in each language. On the website, the complete collection is automatically displayed in pages, in this case 12 pictures per page.

Each picture on the website can be clicked for amplication and the description appears in the language that was choosen by the internet user in the first place. It became very easy to add more pictures, and change the order in which they appear ! Everything managed by the site owner.

Teste: You can also include tests for researches on your website. The results of each user are saved again in the same tree, as children of a specified item. This way, the user has complete control of the content, and can delete erroneuous tests. There is an option to analyse the test results, already calculating totals of given answers. You can import these details in any spreadsheet for further processing.

Test results can be collected in two ways

  • anonymous results - the test is shown to any internet visitor, without knowing who it is. Each test result is identified by IP, and only one answer per IP is accepted.
  • identified result - the visitor must login first, and only then the test is shown. When responding the test reuslt is saved with the user identification.

Groups

You can define users and passwords. You can also specify groups. For each user you can specify if group access is ignored, which is usefull for administrators. If not specified, than individual access rights on items are processed.

For each content item, you can define the permissions as shown on the side. You can open the content item, select the button options, and click on permissions. A new window opens with all available groups, and you can select the groups and permissions.

An important difference: contacts are the visitors you have on your website. They cannot login in the inventory light system, but can login to the website, and may have access to some parts of the website or not. Therefore, they can only have "read" access.

The users of the system are those who can actually login to inventory light, to change content, therefore, also users can be organised in groups, and for each content item you can specify if there is access to open/edit, delete and even to change access rights.

To make it easier, you can specify new permisions for a specific item, and also specify that you want to apply these settings to all children as well.

Technology

The technology used is ASP and the database is MS Access. There is the possibility to use SQL server, for bigger companies with more content and more security.
